When I was in the second grade, I was diagnosed with a learning disability, and had to repeat that grade. Embarrassed and ashamed, I began to feel helpless and angry. I hated school only going because, I wanted to play sports. With the love and support of my parents, and four incredibly beneficial years at Florida A&M University my life changed dramatically, I gained self-confidence and love for myself.
At age 30, I decided to pursue a doctorate degree. After 6 ½ years of overcoming hurdle after hurdle namely my learning disability, I achieved his life-long goal of earning his Doctor of Philosophy from Rutgers University. I have come a long way, from the little boy that had to repeat the second grade.
Now, I am a scholar who reseaches how people learn, the Achievement Gap (especially teaching writing), Popular Culture, the use of social media in the classroom, and Race & Social Class in Schools. I am blessed to be a sought after speaker. I have already shared my story and/or my research with thousands of people.
